I am fascinated by the binary opposition, with frayed edges, between science and art. I would like to investigate this further, to explore and try to answer further questions like:
· Within the ancient framework of wood and stone carving how can I create work that is relevant today?
· How can I transgress the boundaries of conceptual and traditional art, and redefine their relationship?
I am a figurative sculptor with a scientific background, currently working in a range of mediums. I draw on my background in genetics and development biology, using shapes found in nature and the human figure. I want to explore the interaction between science and art. The two areas of work may seem disparate, yet the former provides raw material for the latter.
This has manifested in my work in pieces such as ‘Primordial’ and ‘Primordial II’. Stone has an ancient make up, the embedded fossils link into cell forms. I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of the primordial and the technology that allows us to view the cellular. I strive to derive the essence, often resulting in the abstract. I believe ‘intuition’ is as good a theory as any concerned with aesthetic appreciation, harmony and balance.
